The Library now provides access to our print collections through a delivery van service called Books to Go. You can pickup items at pre-determined pickup locations for each campus.

A quick overview of the service:

  • This service is available to Laurier students, faculty, and staff
  • Requests can be placed in Omni (see the Requesting Items and Accessibility tab)
  • Print items are loaned for 120 days with unlimited renewals

What is included?

You can sign out any circulating physical materials located at the Waterloo and Kitchener (Faculty of Social Work) Libraries and collections located in the Brantford Public Library. See the Frequently Asked Questions tab for more information on which collections the service covers.

How it works:

  1. Request your item (see Requesting Items and Accessibility tab)
  2. When your item is ready for pickup you’ll receive an Item Ready for Pickup notice in your email.
  3. Pick up your item at a scheduled pickup interval. Separate schedule and instructions for each location are available in the tabs above.
  4. Return your item when you’re done using it. See instructions for each location in the tabs above.

How to request items

  1. Place your request through the Omni search
    • It is not possible to borrow books from other Omni libraries (such as the Universities of Waterloo, Guelph, Queen’s, York, etc.) at this time
  2. After locating the Laurier item, select Laurier Users, sign in using your Laurier Single Sign On (SSO) credentials
  3. You will see the request option:
    • Borrow from Laurier Library
  4. Select Wilfrid Laurier University under My University in Pickup University
  5. Select the campus location from which you would like to pick up your items (Waterloo, Kitchener or Brantford)
  6. Add a Needed by date and Comment if desired
  7. Submit request
  8. You will see a Your request was successfully placed message and also be able to see your request in your Omni library account

Contact your subject librarian for help finding resources in Omni or finding alternative resources for those not yet available through the Books to Go van service.

Request processing and notices

  • You will receive a Books to Go item available for pick up notice by email when your requested item is ready for pick up.
  • Requests will be processed as they come in
  • You will receive notification for a pickup for each requested item available
  • You may pick up your items at any time during the designated time slot

Accessibility

After requesting your item please contact the Service Desk if you have any accessibility questions or needs. You can reach us at infouser@wlu.ca or chat with us online during operating hours.

Accessible parking spaces are located in close proximity for pickup spots at both Waterloo and Kitchener campus locations. These are indicated on the map for each location.

Schedule

Pickup is available:

  • Tuesdays and Thursdays 9am-11am

Pickup Location

Please note, if you are driving:

  • You will need to first park in Lot 14 (enter off Bricker Ave.) (indicated by the blue arrow labelled 1: Parking in the following map and description) and then go to Lot 42 by way of the path indicated by the orange arrow labelled 2: Line Up in the following map and description)
  • Accessible parking spaces are located in Lot 42 (enter off Albert St.) and are also indicated on the map
  • Bicycle parking is also available at the front of the library

Pickup Process

  1. Line up at the starting point, indicating by the markings. Please stay at least 6 feet apart.
  2. A table will be set up close to the van where the driver will be placing your books. When you are at the front of the line, announce your last name and first initial to the driver.
    • Please don’t approach the table at this time.
    • In case of inclement weather (e.g. rain), you will be retrieving books directly from the back of the van.
  3. The driver will retrieve your books, pre-packaged in paper bags, and place them on the table.
    • Please stay at the sign until the driver has returned to the van.
    • In case of inclement weather (e.g. rain), the driver will open the rear doors of the van, and your book bundle(s) will be placed there.
  4. Once the driver has moved at least 6 feet away from your book bundle, you can then pick up your books at the table (or the rear of the van if it’s raining)
    • Please do not place the book bundle into another bag at the table or van, but move at least 15 feet away from the table, van, and the lineup.

Returning Items

  • Your items can be returned to the book bins at the entrance to the Waterloo library
    • While you are going up and down the ramp please be conscientious of others and practice physical distancing. The ramp can only allow people to travel in one direction at a time with physical distancing in mind.
  • Returns can be done at any time.
  • While you are able to return your items to our Kitchener location, please note that this can only be done while the Books to Go van is on-site there.

Important Safety Notes About Pickup

  • Please do not use this service if you have any symptoms of COVID-19. A complete list can be found on the Ontario government's COVID-19: Stop the spread page
  • Gloves and a mask are highly recommended
  • You will need to provide your name to receive your items (you are not required to provide ID as part of pickup)
  • Your materials will be placed on a table next to the van; you may only pick them up when instructed to do so, to ensure proper physical distancing
  • NOTE: Please do not sanitize library materials as these chemicals will likely cause damage.

  • Accessible parking spaces are indicated on the map.

  • You can return items to a book bin which will near the Books to Go van each time it comes to Kitchener. See the schedule above for more information.
  • You can return items to the book bins at the entrance to the Waterloo library

Pickup Process

Note: As of Tuesday July 28, requests placed in Omni with a Brantford Pickup location will be processed and held at the BPL Main Branch service desk for pickup.

  • Go to Branford Public Library Main Branch (173 Colborne Street)
  • Your requests will be on hold and can be picked up at the main service desk (the Green Desk) in the main lobby of the front entrance
  • You will need your OneCard to sign out your requested items

Returning Items

  • Your items can be returned to the book bins at the main entrance to the Brantford Public Library, 173 Colborne Street
  • Returns can be done at any time

2. What happens if I can't pick up my items right away?

  • Requested items will be available for 14 days from the date of the Omni notice. Your items will automatically be available on the next pickup date.
  • If you need your items held for longer than 14 days please contact the Service Desk at infouser@wlu.ca or chat with us on our website during operating hours.

3. How can I make a request for accessibility related to the Books to Go van service?

  • Please contact us to arrange for services to meet your resource needs.

4. Can I still request items from other universities?

  • Requesting from other Libraries (e.g. Guelph, Waterloo, other Ontario universities, Canadian or international libraries) is not currently available.
  • Laurier Library is working with our local university partners (both Guelph and Waterloo as well as the Ontario Council of University Libraries) to restore resource sharing and interlibrary loan.

5. Is it safe for me to use the Books to Go service?

We are taking necessary precautions to ensure that materials on our shelves and those that are returned to us are safe to be handled by members of the public.

  • Any returned items are not being processed or handled for the recommended period of 72 hours.
  • If you are feeling unwell or if any member of your household is sick or in isolation, we ask that you refrain from borrowing library materials. This will help us all feel more comfortable and confident with the safety of our collections. Contact your subject librarian for help in finding electronic resources if you feel you should not borrow physical materials through the Books to Go van service.

6. Can I return the items to the library?

  • Yes. Please see the tabs corresponding to location (Waterloo, Kitchener or Brantford) for further information on how to return materials to each of these locations.
  • For materials that are returned, we are taking precautions to ensure that our collections are safe to be handled by members of the public and our staff by quarantining returned items for 72 hours. We appreciate your understanding and patience during this time.

7. Are the loan periods for materials still the same lengths of time?

  • Yes, the loan periods for all Laurier items remains the same. Please see our Borrowing page.

8. When will the Library be open again for in-house use and pickup of items?

  • The Library is following guidelines from the University, the provincial government of Ontario as well as local health authorities
  • We are working extensively on planning for a phased approach to re-opening and reintroducing library services. Please check our Library COVID-19 Services update page for information.

9. Could my item be recalled?

  • Loaned material is not eligible for recall by users but staff reserve the right to recall physical items to support course readings or critical research needs.

10. How long will my item be held?

  • Your item will be held for 14 days from the date you receive your notice

11. Can Alumni, Community Borrowers, and others use the service?

  • Currently the service is only available for WLU Students, Faculty, and Staff.
