Indigenous Histories and Cultures in North America

This resource contains primary and secondary documents such as artwork, speeches, petitions, diaries, journals, correspondence, early linguistic and ethnographic accounts, photographs, maps, rare books and newspapers, ranging from the 16th to the 20th century. The goal of the collection was to cover the important themes and time periods in history of "North American" Indigenous  peoples and to support both research and teaching, illustrating the interaction with European settlers, the American Civil War, government legislation, civil rights movements, religion and economics.

Documents can be browsed by title, date, type or nation. There is a gallery of maps as well as an interactive map, and a detailed chronology of events from 1500 to the present day. There is a basic keyword search function and an advanced search tool that allows keyword, title, author, nation and culture area searching, which can be limited by date range and primary versus secondary resources. Laurier Library provides access to many Adam Matthew resources that can be searched together via their Archive Explorer.
