Library Undergraduate Research Award winners for 2015 announced

The Library is pleased to announce the winners of its new Library Undergraduate Research Award.

The award is given to two junior (first- or second-year) and two senior undergraduates who have demonstrated exceptional use of library resources as part of their regular coursework.

“The Library is the place where Laurier students come together to access and interact with information, generate new ideas, and engage with the great intellectual questions of our time,” said Gohar Ashoughian, Laurier’s university librarian. “This award is about encouraging that thirst for knowledge and learning in our students, and we are delighted by the response it has generated in its inaugural year.”

This year’s inaugural winners of the award are as follows:

Senior award

First place: Adam Monod, for his MU373 paper “The Haydn Effect: A Study of Haydn’s Influence on Mozart’s String Quartet K.387”

Second place: Richard Edwards, for his CH390 paper “Topical Review of the Phase Problem in X-Ray Crystallography”

Junior award

First place: Samantha Sells, for her BU111 Live Case submission

Second place: Ryan Price, also for the BU111 Live Case submission

The award winners were determined by a committee that included librarians and faculty members in Waterloo and Brantford. Each first place award is in the amount of $350, and each second place award is $150.

“We were impressed and inspired by the diversity of the submissions we received – on topics ranging from music and literature to anorexia nervosa to the school system,” said Outreach Librarian Anne Kelly, who administers the award and worked with the Evaluation Committee. “It’s a real testament to the rich academic curiosity of our community of undergraduate researchers here at Laurier.”
