Laurier Library Support for Direct Action

Dear Laurier Community,

Further to the president’s recent message announcing Wilfrid Laurier University’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan, the Laurier Library stands strong with our University community, in solidarity with our faculty, students, staff, and our friends against any form of discrimination, racial injustice, repression, bias, oppression, and persistent inequities faced by Black, Indigenous, and racialized members of our community, within our walls and beyond. Recent events in the US and Canada have highlighted many systemic issues associated with racial injustice, their negative impact and heavy weight on all aspects of our lives - social, economic, and emotional. We recognize that as a profession, librarianship has perpetuated these elements of injustice ingrained in our systems of knowledge organization and practice. Being part of the North-American academic library ecosystem, the Laurier Library was not immune. We strongly believe that by standing together, we have the power to enact change and break the status quo, and we are committed to working towards changing our institution and our practices. We reaffirm our determination and pledge our ongoing commitment to taking direct action, providing necessary resources and professional expertise, and bringing forward events and initiatives to make our environment a more equitable and inclusive place to learn, teach, do research and work. Please stay tuned and visit our web and social media sites for more information.

The Laurier library acknowledges we are located on the Haldimand tract, traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishnaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples. This land is part of the Dish with One Spoon Treaty between the Haudenosaunee and Anishnaabe peoples and symbolizes the agreement to share, protect our resources and not to engage in conflict.
