Trans/mission: Native to the Americas

Trans/mission: Native to the America's is a garden installation located in the sunken garden at the Waterloo campus library. It is part of the Mixedwood Plains Ecosystem, which is acknowledged land. It makes visible the movement of native American economic plants around the world beginning in the 15th century with the return voyages of Christopher Columbus in 1492 from the Caribbean to Spain and Pedro Cabral in 1500 from Brazil to Africa, India, and Portugal.
Ron Benner is an artist, gardener and social justice activist based in London, Ontario. his art practice is dedicated to examining the ecology and political economy of plants, the histories of farming and the global movement of plants.
The project was supported by the Ontario Arts Council, Laurier Sustainable Hawk Fund, Laurier Library and the Robert Langen Art Gallery.

Description of Phlox
Phlox is soft, five-petaled blooms that form dense, cushion-like clusters. Their scent is sweet and lightly spicy. The petals feel velvety, and the narrow leaves are smooth and firm.
