Sociology of Mental Illness

Course #: SY232

You have been asked to select two articles from scholarly sociology journals on the sociology of mental illness Each article should make an original contribution to sociological theory. This is a really challenging search, so I highly recommend that you make an appointment with me for help.

If you want to use an article from a non-sociology journal you will need your instructor's permission, and all articles must be submitted in .pdf format, so it's better to choose from those articles that are already in that format.

How to find good articles:

  1. Go to the Library Subject Guide for Sociology and click on Sociology at ProQuest. You can also use Scholar's Portal journals to do your search, or look up individual journals by title on our website here.
  2. Create your search using the drop down menus on the right side of the search boxes. My best result doing a search for depression was to use "medical sociology" and "depression" as subject headings, which gave me 67 articles that were peer-reviewed and scholarly. Alternatively, since the learning objectives of your course are that mental illness is constructed, try searching "social construction" as a subject heading and "mental illness" as a phrase in the abstract.
  3. Just remember to email your chosen articles to Dr Manley for review and approval before doing your assignment.
Please note:

I have spoken to your professor before about this requirement: “You are not permitted to use articles from aggregators or indirect sources such as Proquest, LexisNexis, or any other aggregator of article”, and he agreed to allow this, so you ARE allowed to use ProQuest or other aggregators to find your article.
