Welcome to Laurier Library's MBA Company Project course guide. This guide provides information sources to help you explain recent company performance and value the shares of the company. You might also want to visit the Company Research guide for additional resources that will help you research your chosen publicly traded company. You can find links to video tutorials to the right under Key links.

Company description

Factiva

Select Company under the Companies/Markets tab at the top > under Get Company Snapshot use the drop-down menu to select Company Name > type company name and click Go > select correct match in results list by clicking on the company name.

Scroll down page to the Performance/Segment Information section to check for charts on revenues by major product lines or by geographic segments. Alternatively, click on Financial Results in top left menu, then select Business Segment Breakdown using the drop-down menu and click Go.

Tip: click on "News" in the top left menu, then filter news articles by the suggested categories (i.e. New Products/Services, Ownership Changes, Capacities/Facilities).

Tip: Make sure you are at the Company Snapshot view. Click on the 3 month stock chart, then use the drop-down menu at left to select date range. The stock chart is interactive: click on a bar in the bar graph (volume) or a data point in the line graph (price) to retrieve news stories on or close to that day to find out what was driving changes in activity.

Infomart

Canadian companies only. To find information on lines of business select Corporate Analyzer in the menu at the top left, then search by company name. Use the Document Navigation tool at the top right or simply scroll down the page to the Current Operations section.

Lexis Nexis Academic

Click the down-pointing arrow next to Search by Content Type > click in Dossier in the Companies section > type company name and click Find > click on correct match in results list. See the Business Description section in the Snapshot view for lines of business/product lines; use links in the left-column menu to navigate the company report, including brands, competitors, recent news and financials.

Mergent Online

Passport GMID

Passport GMID's company profiles sometimes contain a breakdown of revenues by major product lines or by geographic segments. There are two ways to search for company profiles in Passport: 1. Type the company name in the search box at the top right, then click on the individual reports in the results list. 2. Click the Companies tab at the top, then type the company's name in the search box. Click on the hyperlinked documents in the results. Navigate an individual report using the Table of Contents in the left-hand column or download the PDF and scroll or do a Ctrl + F search.

Company strategy

Annual reports

Annual reports can be a rich source of information on company strategy. Look for the Management Discussion & Analysis section.

EDGAR

Find annual reports of U.S. publicly-traded companies (available from 1996) by completing the following steps: Click on Company Filings Search in the left hand menu or from the Filings tab in the top menu bar > type company name or ticker symbol > On the results page click on the CIK or Central Index Key for the correct match > filter the results by specifying the filing type > Click on the documents button for the filing for that date > Click on the link under the Document column to view the filing (the one with the largest file size will be the entire 10-K report).

SEDAR

Find annual reports of Canadian publicy-traded companies.

Mergent Online

Mergent Online is global in scope, providing coverage on over 10,000 publicly-traded companies. Type the company name and select the correct match from the options that appear. On the company profile page, select the Reports tab, then click on Annual Reports in the sub-menu. Click on the report title to view the annual report or the Form 10-K or its international equivalent.

Find articles on company strategy

Business Source Complete

Type the company name and select Company Entity from the drop-down menu to the right. On the next row type the following search string: "company strategy" OR "corporate strategy". Alternatively, use the proper subject heading by typing Business planning and selecting the Subject Terms from the drop-down menu to the right.

Proquest Business Collection

Type the company name and select Company/organization from the drop-down menu to the right on the same row. On the next row type the following search string: "company strategy" OR "corporate strategy". Alternatively, use the proper subject heading by typing Corporate planning and selecting Subject heading from the drop-down menu to the right.

Company profiles: specialized business databases

Passport GMID

Once in Passport GMID (and after you accept the terms and conditions) type the company name in the search box at the top right, then click the search icon to execute the search. Click on several results (there's lots of information there!) but you can find information on the company's strategic direction in the document identified as Local Company Profile.

Industry analysis

Marketline Advantage

Provides profiles of hundreds of geographically-specific industries or markets. The framework for industry analysis is based on Porter's Five Forces.

Performance analysis

Damodaran Online - Financial Ratios and Measures

Click on Data definitions under the Data tab at the top. Here you can find the definitions of several ratios, why the measure is used, along with comments on its use or misuse. The site was created by a professor of finance at the Stern School of Business at New York University.

Factiva

Factiva provides ratio comparison reports that allow you to benchmark your company against sector, industry and S & P 500 averages.

Select Company under the Companies/Markets tab at the top > under Get Company Snapshot use the drop-down menu to select Company Name > type company name and click Go > select correct match in results list by clicking on the company name > click Reports in menu at top left > use drop-down menu to select Ratio Comparison Report > select output format (i.e. PDF) at right > click View Report.

Google Finance

Find valuation and profitability ratios with industry and sector comparisons. Search the company, then scroll down and click on "More from Reuters." Then click the Financials tab at the top and scroll down the page.

Infomart

Find Canadian industry ratios by clicking on Industry Reports in the left-hand menu. The reports provide annuals for 7 years. Click on the Archive for some additional historical ratios.

Key Business Ratios

This tool allows you to examine industry benchmarks compiled from D&B®’s database of public and private companies, featuring 14 key business ratios for public and private companies in 800 lines of business. The ratios are divided into three groups:

  • Solvency Ratios measure the financial soundness of a business and how well the company can satisfy its short- and long-term obligations;
  • Efficiency Ratios measure the quality of the firm’s receivables and how efficiently it uses and controls its assets, how effectively the firm is paying suppliers, and whether the firm is overtrading or undertrading on its equity (using borrowed funds); and
  • Profitability Ratios measure how well a company performs; analyze how profit was earned relative to sales, total assets and net worth.

Mergent Online

With global coverage of publicly-traded companies, Mergent Online provides company financials for up to past 15 years. Type company name and select the correct match. Then click the Company Financials tab.

Thomson ONE

Provides key ratios. Under Company Views tab, mouse over Overviews > Company Overviews. Then type company name or symbol in search box at top left. ** You must use Internet Explorer for full functionality of the database.

Risk/Volatility: BETA Estimation

Betas provided by online resources present challenges to investors because their variable inputs (such as time frame and the index used) are often unknown. Calculating beta yourself is often preferable. Nevertheless, the following resources provide Beta for your reference purposes.

Factiva

Provides Beta (5 years) for company, sector, industry and S & P 500 averages.

Select Company under the Companies/Markets tab at the top > under Get Company Snapshot use the drop-down menu to select Company Name > type company name and click Go > select correct match in results list by clicking on the company name > click Reports in menu at top left > use drop-down menu to select Ratio Comparison Report > select output format (i.e. PDF) at right > click View Report.

Google Finance

Type company name > scroll down page and click on "More from Reuters" > click the Financials tab > scroll down to the Valuation Ratios section.

Valuation

Analyst reports

Review analyst reports for other analyst's investment recommendation and valuation sections.

Thomson ONE

Under the Screening and Analysis tab, select Research > Research Search > enter company name > select date range (default is last 90 days) > click Search > click on title of report in results list > check the box next to Select All Reports > click View at bottom left. ** You must use Internet Explorer for full functionality of the database.

Lexis Nexis Academic

Click the down-pointing arrow next to Search by Content Type > click in Dossier in the Companies section > type company name and click Find > click on correct match in results list > click on Analyst Reports in the left column menu.

Find E-books on Valuation

1. Search Library catalogue

Go to Primo Advanced Search and select the Books+ tab. Enter subject headings such as "Business enterprises valuation" OR "Corporations valuation" and then select "in the subject" from the drop-down menu. Refine results list to online resources, resource type (i.e. book) and Library by using the menu at left.

2. Search E-book collections

Use same/similar terms as above to search within ebook collections. Try searching in both the Subject and Title fields.
